North Carolina is a beautiful state, with mountains and many miles of oceanfront, given its many inlets, harbors and outer barrier islands. Its located mid-Atlantic, the 28th largest and 9th-most populated of the 50 United States. North Carolina is bordered by its sister state – South Carolina to the south (obvi), Virginia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Georgia and Tennessee to the west.
North Carolina has 3,375 miles of shoreline according to NOAA, just a little less than Maine at 3,478, California at 3,427, compared to Alaska at over 30,000 and Florida at 8,436.
We love exploring North Carolina’s seaside towns, from the quiet scenic towns of Hertferd, Belhaven and Edentown – which are remote, small, humble and happy – with lots of deep water boating opportunities and great values.
North Carolina’s Outer Banks are long and vast, Kitty Hawk to Nags Head to Cape Hatteras – with tremendous natural beauty – salt marsh, beaches and forest, weathered by storms and the sea.
Beaufort North Carolina is a gem, historical and happening with its ideal waterfront location on the ICWW. See our travel tips on where to stay, what to tour and where to dine waterfront in Beaufort. See our Tale of Two Beauforts too.
Beach towns of Morehead and Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle and Swansboro are all pleasant seaside communities. While inland waterways lead to cities of Wilmington, New Bern and Washington which are vibrant and historic as well. Calabash is the last great waterfront town before crossing the border to South Carolina and Myrtle Beach. North Carolina is a paradise for boaters, history and nature buffs, golfers and bikers, and those looking for a relaxed friendly pace with pleasant year round temps.
